Demystifying  Publication

Practical advice for scholars to communicate with clarity and publish with confidence.

Capture the essence of your research article through the abstract

As a researcher, you know that one of the first elements of a research article is its abstract. The abstract plays a crucial role in academic publishing by providing a concise summary of the research, aiding decision-making, enabling information retrieval, saving time for readers, and enhancing the visibility and impact of the study. Here is what an abstract does:

It’s a sneak peek: Think of the abstract as a mini version of your whole article. It gives a quick summary of what you did, how you did it, and what you found. Busy researchers don’t have time to read every word you wrote, so the abstract lets them decide if your study is worth their attention.

It catches their eye: While you submit your article to a journal for publication, journal editors and reviewers most often skim through the abstract to decide whether your article deserves to be published.

Remember, research journals usually receive around 4-5 times the number of articles they publish. In other words, journal editors and reviewers have a herculean task before them in choosing the right article for their journal within an incredibly short span of time.

And, what do they do? They usually skim through the articles to see if they match the aim and scope of their journal and if the research is good enough to find a place in their journal.

So, make it pop! Show them your research is cool, relevant, and well done. A strong abstract can make all the difference in getting your article accepted.

It speeds up the editorial process: Most academic journals reject three out of four articles during desk review and peer review stages. In particular, during desk review, the reviewer essentially skims through the title and the abstract to decide whether the article is suitable for their journal. A well-written abstract helps the reviewer make a quick decision.

It gets you discovered: Abstracts are like breadcrumbs that lead other researchers to your work. They get indexed in databases and search engines, so people searching for specific topics can find your article easily. Be smart and use keywords that others are likely to search for. This increases the chances of your work being seen and cited.

It is always free for the reader: Journals provide the option to publish an article via the traditional route or the open access (OA) route. In the traditional route, the article can be read only by purchasing it (through library subscriptions or by purchasing the article separately). In the open access route, the entire article is available at free of cost for the reader.

In either case, the abstract can be read by anyone without paying a subscription fee. Thus, in the case of subscription-based articles, the abstract helps the researcher to decide whether a purchase is required.

It saves everyone’s time: Nobody has time to read a million articles. By writing a clear and concise abstract, you help readers decide whether your study is what they’re looking for. If they like what they see, they’ll dig deeper and read the whole article. If not, they’ll move on. It’s all about efficiency, my friend!

It makes an impact: Your research deserves to be heard, right? Well-written abstracts can grab people’s attention and make them want to read more. A killer abstract can lead to more citations, collaborations, and overall recognition for your work. So, make it engaging, make it exciting, and get ready to make a splash!

Remember, the abstract is the door to your work. So, give it the attention it deserves, and make it inviting!
